History of Civil Service Day in Guatemala
The Civil Service Day is celebrated on May 11 , because it was on this day but in 1968 that the Civil Service Law , decree 1758 of the Congress of the Republic, came into force.
This Law led to a debate of a year and a half, in addition to numerous studies and around 11 bills. To draft the Civil Service Law in Guatemala , a commission of several representatives was formed, who were commissioned to travel to Colombia and Puerto Rico to look at the way in which laws of this type functioned in those countries. This mission was sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development.
The law was outstanding in several respects. One of them established the opposition system that eliminated favoritism, especially the political one, and also the creation of a National Civil Service Board and the National Civil Service Office . Although the law had to be implemented immediately, it was established that for logistical reasons, it would begin to be applied from the year 1969.
